So… what a finale!
I will start off by saying, I never really wanted to see Audrey killed, but obviously, from the writers perspective she was always going to be an option for Jack. I still don’t understand why. They had 6 months together and a couple days here and there since. Which doesn’t mean they couldn’t love one another very much, but a true unconditional love? When they both had been able to move on with seemingly little regret to find happiness. I have never seen them as each other’s ‘one true love’ or meant to be. And that’s not just because I am a Chlacker, but because she had a hard time dealing with who Jack really was, what he did and what he was willing do to for justice. Day 9, was the first time I saw her accept what Jack should and, indeed, had to do, but it was because of personal reasons. How would she have felt if it wasn’t so personal? Anyway, this was the only way to let Jack have his freedom, or some semblance of it, he was tortured over her before, he will remain, but now he has justice and can come to some piece with that.
Now as for Jack and Chloe, they’ve had a helluva day. I think we were all disappointed when it was revealed Jack getting caught and saving Chloe was just a means to an end, which I still believe is double edged, he needed her, but had he been too late, there would have been hell to pay by the CIA.
Chloe lost her way and Jack actually thought that he was all alone. The last minutes, we finally see Jack acknowledge and accept something we’ve all known and seen for years. When Audrey died and then he saw the blood of Chloe, he knew that the only other woman (besides his daughter and granddaughter) that meant anything to him, may not have a life on this earth anymore and knowing Chloe was gone, was just too much to take. Just like the moment he contemplated putting a bullet in his head at the news of Audrey, there was no hesitation in giving his life over for Chloe. He could lose everyone else, he always knew Chloe would be there. That knowledge allowed him to bury any feelings he may have, be those feelings just as a best friend who he can’t live without or he’s seeing how right it could be for them if there is ever a chance to be free because he has released all the other notions he had and allowed himself to accept the role Chloe has in his life.
This day was the first time we really have seem them on completely opposite sides. Chloe had said her goodbye, she was ready to try to let him go. Though Adrian made every snarky comment he could about Jack always being in her head. I’ve always thought the fact that Jack always chose Chloe said more about what he thinks and feels on a subconscious level than anything he says. And I believe part of it is because she was always relatively safe. In day 5 he gave him his new life to make sure she lived, in day 9, he gave up his freedom to make sure she lived, only this is the first time he’s been up close and facing the prospect of a Chloe dead in front of him, would prove to be his undoing. She is the only one who has cared unconditionally, even when she didn’t want to, that’s why it’s unconditional. She’s sacrificed so much because she believes in him and his mission and I think he finally woke up to that and just how strong she is.
I saw his smiles at the end as a phoenix rising from the ashes. He was given new life, a reason to wait to fight and survive. Let us not forget, “If anything happens to her or my family, your entire world will come apart.”
